Making the World Expo More Accessible
In a move to boost visitor convenience and address sluggish reservation numbers, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition has announced significant changes to its “Park & Ride” system. Starting June 24, visitors will be able to book parking on the same day of their visit, and a new discount policy for afternoon arrivals is being finalized. This strategic shift aims to make Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, more accessible for spontaneous travelers and local residents.
Background: A Response to Extremely Low Demand
The “Park & Ride” system is a core component of the Expo’s transportation plan, designed to manage traffic flow to the event site on Yumeshima island. Visitors driving to the Expo are required to park at one of three large-scale lots located in Maishima, Sakai, or Izumiotsu, which collectively offer a capacity of approximately 7,000 vehicles. From there, they take a dedicated shuttle bus to the Expo venue.
However, since reservations opened on May 24, demand has been exceptionally low. As of May 21, the booking rate for the first month of the Expo (starting April 13, 2025) stood at a mere 1%. The figure for weekdays was even more alarming, at just 0.3%. The previous rule, which required reservations to be made by the day before the visit, was identified as a major barrier for visitors who prefer not to plan their trips far in advance.
Key Changes to Boost Convenience
To combat this issue and enhance flexibility, the organizers have introduced two key changes.
Same-Day Bookings from June 24
The most significant change is the introduction of same-day reservations. From June 24, visitors can check parking availability and secure a spot on the day they intend to go to the Expo. This revision caters to a more casual style of travel, allowing people to decide to visit the Expo on a whim, check the weather, and drive there without needing to pre-plan.
Afternoon Discount Initiative
Furthermore, the association is solidifying plans to introduce a discount for visitors who park after 3:00 PM. While the exact discount amount has not yet been announced, this initiative is designed to stimulate attendance during the later hours of the day. It could appeal to local workers finishing their day or tourists looking for a more affordable evening experience at the Expo.
The standard parking fees, which include the round-trip shuttle bus fare, are set at ¥3,000 for weekdays, ¥3,500 for weekends and public holidays, and ¥4,000 for specific high-demand periods. The afternoon discount will be applied to these rates.
