The Long-Awaited Return to Kansai

The Doha-Osaka route was previously suspended in 2016. While a relaunch was planned for 2020, it was indefinitely postponed due to the global travel restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This much-anticipated return reconnects western Japan with Qatar Airways’ extensive global network, which serves over 170 destinations.

Operating daily with the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900, the flight provides seamless connections for travelers from the Middle East, Europe, and Africa to Osaka. This strategic re-establishment not only caters to inbound tourism and business but also offers Kansai residents a vital gateway to the rest of the world via the world-class hub in Doha.

A Strategic Boost for Expo 2025 and Regional Tourism

The timing of this route’s resumption is crucial, directly aligning with the preparations for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. The event, scheduled from April to October 2025, is expected to attract an estimated 28.2 million visitors, including approximately 3.5 million from overseas.

Fueling the Expo Excitement

The resumed Qatar Airways service is poised to become a primary conduit for international attendees. It significantly enhances accessibility for visitors from nations across Europe and Africa, who can now reach Osaka with a single, convenient stop in Doha. This improved connectivity is expected to be instrumental in achieving the ambitious visitor targets for the Expo and ensuring a smooth travel experience for global participants.

Revitalizing the Local Economy

Beyond the Expo, the economic implications for the Kansai region are substantial. The route is anticipated to drive a new wave of inbound tourism, particularly attracting high-spending travelers from the Middle East. This influx will provide a significant boost to hotels, retailers, and cultural attractions throughout Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe.

Kansai International Airport has been steadily recovering its international passenger traffic since the pandemic. In the fiscal year 2019, KIX handled over 22 million international passengers. The re-addition of this key route will accelerate the airport’s return to pre-pandemic traffic levels and strengthen its status as a leading international hub in Japan.

Future Outlook: A More Connected Kansai

The resumption of the Osaka-Doha flight is more than just a new line on an airport’s departure board; it is a symbol of Kansai’s re-emerging presence on the global stage. This move is likely to encourage other international airlines to increase their services to KIX, further enhancing the region’s competitiveness.

For travelers, this means more choice, greater convenience, and better access to one of Japan’s most dynamic and culturally rich regions. As Osaka continues to prepare for the world’s spotlight in 2025, the return of Qatar Airways signals a bright and globally connected future for Kansai.
