United Airlines is set to significantly enhance connectivity between the Americas and Western Japan. Starting next spring, on March 27, 2027, the carrier will launch a new daily non-stop service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Kansai International Airport (KIX). This upcoming route marks a strategic expansion for United Airlines, catering to the unprecedented surge in inbound tourism to the Kansai region and providing a highly anticipated direct link for leisure and business travelers alike.
Building on the Momentum of Record-Breaking Tourism
The announcement comes at a time when Japan’s tourism sector is experiencing explosive growth. Last year, in 2025, Japan welcomed a record-breaking 42.68 million international visitors. The Kansai region has been at the epicenter of this boom, successfully hosting the World Expo 2025 and leaving a lasting legacy of modernized infrastructure.
Kansai International Airport is perfectly positioned to handle this new influx of daily passengers from Los Angeles. Following the completion of a major renovation of Terminal 1 in March 2025, KIX expanded its international passenger capacity to 40 million annually. During the 2025 fiscal year, the airport already recorded over 27 million international passengers. The addition of the LAX route by United Airlines will directly utilize these upgraded facilities, ensuring a seamless arrival experience for North American tourists.

For travelers from the Americas, the new LAX-KIX route provides much-needed itinerary options. Until now, many US tourists have been forced to route their Japan trips through the heavily congested Tokyo hubs of Narita or Haneda, before taking the Shinkansen or a domestic flight down to Osaka.
Starting in March 2027, visitors will be able to fly directly into the commercial and cultural heart of Japan. This direct access significantly reduces travel fatigue and offers an immediate gateway to the culinary streets of Osaka, the historic temples of Kyoto, the sacred deer parks of Nara, and the spiritual trails of Wakayama.
