On June 2, Kansai International Airport (KIX) officially marked the completion of its large-scale, five-year Terminal 1 renovation project. This overhaul represents the first major upgrade to the facility since its doors originally opened in 1994. Driven by the core concepts of enhancing the passenger experience and expanding international flight capacity, the project has successfully increased the central international departure area to 1.6 times its pre-renovation size, reflecting a 60 percent expansion in the international terminal surface area.
Strategic Enhancements and the Passenger Experience
The grand reopening earlier this month finalized the fourth and ultimate phase of a modernization journey that began in 2021. Designed to centralize duty-free shopping, dining, and waiting zones, the newly unified layout dramatically optimizes passenger flow. A total of 24 new outlets have been introduced in this newly expanded north-south section.
Travelers passing through KIX can now enjoy an elevated retail and culinary landscape. The terminal features a dedicated Japanese food court offering authentic regional cuisine, luxury brand boutiques, and the first-ever permanent Universal Studios Japan official store located at a Japanese airport. Additionally, the airport has implemented a new “Call to Gate” system. By controlling the timing of boarding announcements, this system allows travelers to relax in the commercial and lounge spaces longer, offering a more relaxed pre-departure experience and minimizing crowding at the boarding gates.
Background: Adapting to the Tourism Boom
This extensive modernization was strategically timed to accommodate the rapid recovery and sustained growth in international passenger traffic. While Japan welcomed approximately 3.5 million foreign visitors in May 2026, several key inbound markets—including South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States—recorded all-time monthly highs.
As the peak summer travel season approaches, KIX is now fully equipped to handle massive passenger volumes. Prior to this renovation, the airport was seeing far more international passengers than it did when it first opened, pushing its facilities to their limits. The newly integrated layout and centralized security checkpoints are direct responses to the operational bottlenecks experienced during previous tourism surges.
